The Ka'u desert is an amazing expanse of lava flows, sparse vegetation, and volcanic ash sand dunes. Small treasures include Pele's hair (tiny strands of luminescent glass-like lava formations), footprints recorded in volcanic ash-mud of native Hawiians long ago, and the many visible lava tubes.
